This is a real dinosaur foot.
It still amazes me that these things were REAL and that we’re finding things like this. Skeletons are one thing but this foot is freaking wild.

this is megalapteryx didinus, aka the upland moa. it was not—i repeat, NOT—a dinosaur, at least not in the traditional sense.
(i could go on to argue that birds are a clade of dinosauria but i’ll leave that out of the discussion for now.)
it was the smallest member of the moa family and the last to become extinct, sharing the world with humans until about 1500 AD.
its closest living relatives are the ratite family, which include the ostrich, emu, cassowary and the spiritual successor to our so-called “dinosaur,” which roams its primordial new zealand stomping grounds to this day…
